Zeus gave Pandora a beautiful jar as a wedding gift. Unbeknown to Pandora, the present was an instrument of vengeance toward Pandora's fiancé, Epimetheus, and his brother Prometheus. Pandora opened the jar and saw evil, sickness, and death escaping, and spilling all over the Earth. She closed the jar immediately without realizing that Hope was lying underneath all the terrible things trapped in the jar. In the end, "Hope remained there in an unbreakable home within under the rim of the great jar, and did not fly out at the door, for the lid of the jar stopped her," so Hesiod, The Storyteller, ends the account. | I guess this is what psychotherapy feels like sometimes. We open the lid that keeps our stories repressed, our anger at bay, our fears chained. On occasions we even feel a bit more anxious or sad or confused as we walk the therapeutic journey. If you feel like this, keep digging in, for Hope lies there, at the bottom of the jar. |
